Computer science is a dynamic and rapidly growing area that has become an integral part of the world that we live in today. Having a degree in this field will provide you with a deep understanding of theories and emerging technologies.

In this article, Edumetry and Asia Pacific University (APU)  will be talking about the domain of Computer Science & its potential future career options. The speaker of the webinar was Mr. Naresh, who is the academic leader of the school of computing.

What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is the study of computers and computing as well as their theoretical and practical applications.

Computer Science applies the principles of mathematics, engineering, and logic to a plethora of functions, including algorithm formulation, software and hardware development and artificial intelligence (AI).

From the movies you watch on your smartphones during LRT/ MRT rides to the functioning of the entire LRT/ MRT system itself, the use of computer science has become a part of our daily lives. Even your favourite apps such as Instagram, Food Panda and Google Maps require computer science to exist.

The Domain of Computer Science

  • Explore technical knowledge, skills and background in the design  and organisation of computer systems.
  • Evaluation of design paradigms, languages, algorithms and techniques used to develop complex software systems.
  • Evaluate and respond to opportunities for developing and exploiting new technologies.

The algorithms and computer models in computer science are useful in almost every field including
  • medicine (E.g., using CAT scans to diagnose diseases
  • linguistics (E.g., using computers for speech recognition)
  • Economics (E.g., using models to predict economic conditions).

Undertaking a Computer Science Degree will equip you with the skills to become a competent software developer and programmer.

Students will learn all aspects of computing such as web and software development, mobile computing, interface design and system administration.

Main Subject Areas

  1. Computer Theory
  2. Programming
  3. Data Structures
  4. Networking
  5. Computer Systems
  6. Computer Languages
  7. Mathematics
  8. Systems Analytics and Design
  9. Image Processing
  10. Digital Thinking and Innovation
  11. Operation System (OS)
  12. Computer Architecture
  13. System Administration
  14. Databases

In fact, job demand for computer science is rapidly increasing in Malaysia. This high demand gives students the freedom to work all over the world, enjoying excellent graduate prospects upon completion of their studies

Q&A Session

If a student is interested in machines or semiconductors, should he or she go for a Physics or Computer Science program?
Mr. Naresh: I’d advise Computer Science as semiconductor is commonly used in Computer Architecture.

Physics provides an analytic problem-solving outlook and basic understanding of nature, while computer science enhances the ability to make practical and marketable applications, in addition to having its own theoretical interest.

Is the Computer Science program hard?
Mr. Naresh: Computer Science is a hard discipline to learn. But, if you devote sufficient time and effort to studying the discipline, then it is possible to pick up on the principles and theories of Computer Science.

What can you do with a Computer Science degree in today’s age?
Mr. Naresh: Due to the proliferation of computers throughout society, computer scientists are needed in virtually every field. With the innovation of technology, AI,  smart gadgets, etc., computer scientists and programmers  push for the results that make our lives easier and more efficient, whether this be in healthcare, education, finance or engineering.

Can you work from home with a computer science degree ?
Mr. Naresh: It is possible. Coding can always be done from anywhere in the world with a computer and internet connection. At the end of the day, it may depend on the company. Especially if you work for an international or foreign country, there is a possibility of working from home.

What are the differences between applied  mathematics with computing and Computer Science?
Mr. Naresh: Mathematics is the foundation of Computer Science. It is important to note that you cannot enrol this program if you fail the mathematics subject in foundation. This is because Mathematics is the core subject that allows students to enhance their logic, problem solving and decision making for all complex Computer Science projects.

Programming languages are constantly evolving and upgrading? How can students keep up with multiple programming languages?
Mr. Naresh: Programming languages are created to make programming easier for everyone. Metaphorically, When one goes to a bigger library with more resources, he or she tends to receive more knowledge and principles.

In fact, most of the concepts in programming are roughly the same. Thus, students should be able to pick up once they familiarise with the coding concept.

What is the difference between IT and Computer Science?
Mr. Naresh: IT is much lighter compared to Computer Science. IT involves working both with hardware (e.g. CPUs, RAM, hard-disks) and software (e.g. operating systems, web browsers, mobile applications). Whereas Computer Science deals with the development and testing of software and software systems.

In the current Computer Science industry, what is the most essential thing that needs to be done now?
Mr. Naresh: In order to be successful in Computer Science, Academic qualification is not the only part you should be concentrated on. Technical Qualification is also very important. For example, Cisco Certified Network Associate, Microsoft certified Professional, AWS Certified Qualification. These will be an added advantage on top of your academic degree qualification.
