Authored By AIMST University
Are you considering enrolling for a biotechnology degree? For high school graduates, biotechnology is one of the areas that can open the door to many future opportunities.

There is no way you are going to be confined to a pharmaceutical company or forced to work as a technician for medical devices. As a biotechnologist, you can choose to work in clinical laboratories, regulatory bodies, private companies, and government agencies.

In this article, we will introduce you to 10 careers you can pursue as a graduate of Bachelor of Biotechnology.

Biomedical Engineer
As a Biomedical Engineer, you are required to be very innovative. You will have to analyze problems and design solutions to medical and biological problems.

Your work will lead to the development of innovative devices, equipment, or computer software. A biomedical engineer develops advanced analytical, diagnostic, and therapeutic solutions and works in a laboratory or hospital.

Biochemist
Biochemistry is concerned with studying the molecules of life. As a biochemist, you will be concerned with aspects such as cell development, disease, growth and heredity.

You will also be required to solve different biological problems. As part of your job, you will be studying biological processes intending to develop new techniques for detecting metabolites.

When you discover something new, you will write a scientific article or report about it.

Microbiologist
Microbiology is the study of algae, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and other microorganisms. As a microbiologist, your work will be geared towards solving problems related to agriculture, climate, environment, and health.

Using knowledge of various microorganisms, you will create solutions for the control, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases.

Microbiologist

Biological Technician
Biological Technicians work in laboratories doing scientific experiments, tests and analysis. They assist biologists, microbiologists and scientists in their work.

In addition to research, they also clean lab equipment to prevent cross-contamination of substances.

Their duties may involve identifying organisms, studying microbes, separating proteins and administering newly-developed medicine.

Biotechnology Professor
Why not? With a Bachelor of Biotechnology in Malaysia, you can go ahead and become a professor at a university. However, you will be required to advance your education to the doctorate level.

As a professor, you will teach students, perform research, and develop scholarly articles. You will work in a vocational school, community college, professional school, or university.

Food Scientist
Food science is concerned with ascertaining the safety of food by studying its chemical, microbiological and physical properties.

It is a multi-disciplinary science that borrows heavily from chemistry, engineering, microbiology and so on. Your work will be concerned with discovering safe food packaging, preservation, storage and distribution methods.

You may work in advertising, quality control or be a production supervisor or research and development specialist.

Medical Scientist
The work of a Medical Scientist is to research and study human conditions and diseases. They carry out experiments on infectious organisms that may cause the deterioration of human health.

Like medical doctors, they are also concerned with the function of human body parts and their relationship to disease. With that kind of knowledge, they can come up with possible treatments for various diseases.

Animal Scientist
Animal Scientists are concerned with understanding how domestic animals and livestock function biologically. In cattle, they aim to establish the most efficient way of producing milk and meat.

They focus on aspects such as diseases, genetics, growth, nutrition and reproduction to improve production. In this line of work, you will be based in industry, government sectors or a university.

Genetic Engineer
Genetic engineering is the manipulation or altering of the DNA of organisms to improve their attributes.

It is an intricate job that involves removing or adding components of DNA to create something entirely new.

For example, Genetic Engineers have used their skills and knowledge to overcome hereditary problems and find treatments for diseases. You can start with a Bachelor of Biotechnology and advance to PhD.

Biotechnology Entrepreneur
If you do not want to seek employment, why not start your own business? After years of experience, you might have discovered a new way of doing things. Or, you might have come up with a new product.

You can put it out there for people to buy. However, you should be able to raise capital for your venture. To beat the competition, you need to continually innovate new products.
