Our English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) is designed to help you improve your English language skills in preparation to study or to progress in your career.

Swinburne Sarawak offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as the English language course.

The English for Academic Purposes course is designed to teach you the language skills needed to study at university. It can help you meet the minimum English language entry requirements for entry to your chosen course at Swinburne Sarawak.  When you choose to study the EAP course at Swinburne Sarawak, the content and length of your course will be personalised to your existing English language skills. Our aim is to help you meet your goals. The course duration is between ten and 30 weeks. Students have access to self-guided and online learning resources, participate in group projects and excursions, and have access to student clubs.

Course structure
English for Academic Purposes, Levels 3–5 (Intermediate to Advanced) is designed to prepare you for direct entry to your chosen course Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak Campus) by helping you meet the minimum English language requirements for the course. The program focuses on academic language, critical thinking and academic literacy skills and aims to enhance your success in your chosen course.

The English for Academic Purposes course start every five weeks and ranges in duration from ten to 30 weeks.

Independent learning and research skills are an important part of university study. As part of your English language course, you will spend a minimum of five hours each week developing independent e-learning skills.

You can complete the e-learning component of your course on our online learning management system, Canvas, from home or anywhere with a reliable internet connection.


Class timetable
There will be morning and afternoon classes Monday to Friday.

Entry to Swinburne course
Students studying English for Academic Purpose may be eligible to transfer to their chosen Swinburne course, provided they meet the minimum English language entry requirements.

Prerequisites
Evidence of English proficiency is necessary for students wishing to undertake further studies at Swinburne Sarawak after their English language course. Students who do not have evidence of English proficiency can opt to sit for an English Placement Test, either at Swinburne or online at any Swinburne Representative office.


IELTS or equivalent
  • Advanced (EAP) IELTS 5.5 - 6.0 or equivalent
  • Upper-intermediate (EAP) IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
  • Intermediate IELTS 5.0 or equivalent
  • Pre-intermediate IELTS 4.5 or equivalent
  • Elementary IELTS 3.5 or equivalent


English Placement Test
Our English Placement Test (EPT) is ideal for you if you do not have an IELTS or other approved international English language test score. You will need to complete an English placement test as part of your application to study at Swinburne.

You can sit for this EPT free-of-charge (for first attempt only) during office hours at our campus or online. However, you must request a booking through our Admissions Office at least 3 days prior the date you intend to take the test. You will then be sent a confirmation email of the test date and time.

The test measures all skills and will take approximately 1 hour to complete. Based on your results, we will recommend the number of weeks you will need to complete ELICOS before you can enrol into your chosen course.

Swinburne reserves the right to conduct a placement test on arrival (or in the first week of your study) to assess all students' level of English. This may affect the duration of your English course if the result shows you need more or fewer weeks than originally offered. This may, in turn, affect your timely entry into future courses. 
  • Malaysian students: RM2,678 per level
  • International students: RM3,605 per level


The indicative course fees shown here applies to students studying on-campus in Malaysia for the relevant year only. They are based on a standard study load per year. However, please note that fees are assessed according to a student’s study load in each semester, and variation to study load will result in an adjustment to tuition fees. All fees are subject to annual review and may be adjusted.
Levels EAP 3 to EAP 5

English for Academic Purposes aims to develop the English language skills needed to help you succeed at university. The program focuses on:

  • preparing assignments
  • taking notes and writing
  • communicating in multicultural environments
  • making presentations
  • improving your vocabulary.


Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes programs are designed to prepare you meet the minimum English language entry requirements to enter your chosen Swinburne course, including Foundation, Diplomas, Bachelor Degrees, Master Degrees and PhD courses.

At advanced levels of study, classes are separated into undergraduate and postgraduate students. Classes may also be streamed according to students’ chosen discipline of study.

  • Access to current and informative written and online texts
  • Scientifically supported materials, teaching and learning strategies
  • Innovative use of technology
  • Assessment every five weeks
