What Is E-Commerce, And Who Is Suitable to Pursue It?

E- commerce, which is also known as electronic commerce, can be defined as the purchasing or selling of goods and services by using the internet. In this era where everything is constantly growing and changing, E commerce is seen as something that is essential for any modern businesses. 

 In this field of study, demand risks, innovation risk & inefficiency risk would be learnt and students would also learn about how the internet or the web helps to reduce these risks. In short, E-commerce is a mix of marketing, information technology, analysts and traditional business skills like finance, accounting and management.


E-Business v.s. E-Commerce


E-business includes e-commerce but also covers internal processes such as production, inventory management, product development, risk management, finance, knowledge management and human resources. E-business strategy is more complex, more focused on internal processes, and aimed at cost savings and improvements in efficiency, productivity and cost savings. 


4 Categories of E- Commerce


  1. Business to Consumer (B2C)
    This happens when businesses sell their goods/ products to an individual consumer. An example would be you buying from an online retailer.
  2. Consumer to Consumer (C2C)
    This happens when consumers sell their goods/ services to another consumer. An example would be selling your old furniture on Carousell.
  3. Consumer to Business (C2B)
    This happens when consumers offer their own products/ services to a business. An example of this would be when an influencer does exposure to their online audience in exchange for a fee.
  4. Business to Business (B2B)
    This happens when businesses sell their goods/ services to other businesses. An example would be a business selling their software as a service to other businesses.

  1. Creativity
    In this modern era where industries continue to evolve day by day, creativity is known to be essential for people who would like to pursue this field. This helps them find new and innovative techniques to solve problems that may arise.
  2. Communication Skills
    Writing and oral presentation skills are one of the important skills that would be needed in this field.This is because work is typically done collaborating with different teams and persuasive decisions are often needed.
  3. Critical Thinking Skills
    In this field, marketing and sales, stock control, shipping, and delivery logistics, communication with customers and service providers as well as keeping an eye on your overall probability are few of the responsibilities that are needed to fulfil. With critical thinking e-commerce business owners can step back, look at the different elements and decide the next step in order to meet business and customers needs.
